Gorge Lake
North Cascades National Park is located in Northern Washington, not far from the Canadian border. It can be easily visited from Seattle, roughly a 2-hour drive. The Cascades was accessible in winter, which the main road (highway 20) was primarily open throughout most of the park. There is a lot of the park that is not easy to explore, as well as some with road closures in the winter, yet you still see the beauty of this area and get a good take on this National Park. I definitely want to come back to the Cascades and do some summer backpacking, it looks like this place is a wonderland for backcountry hiking and camping. Driving into the park, you first get to go through the Skagit Valley, famous for its farming and the beautiful Skagit River.
Diablo Lake
Where the road was closed, we parked our car and decided to walk down the road past the closure. We hiked about a mile and got some pretty good views. Several people were cross-country skiing or snowshoeing from this area, and exploring the park where it was closed to vehicles. Short and sweet, but I look forward to coming back to this park. We just came for a few hours on our way up to Canada. Next up British Colombia and Alberta for the next 2 weeks!
