Pacsafe is the leader in anti-theft travel backpacks and camera bags and we are very excited about the latest Venturesafe X40 Plus backpack. For three years, Pacsafe has been our go-to brand to keep our valuables and camera gear safe. In that same period, we went from a DSLR camera with one lens to multiple lenses, to today where we travel with a full frame camera, four lenses and a drone. Our need for a comfortable camera backpack that securely stores all our gear has never been greater. Pacsafe answers the call and some.

Security

Pacsafe is the leader in security features that keep your gear safe. Several key features include eXomesh slashgaurd material, slashgaurd straps, secured zip tags and an RFID Pocket. A new feature that we really love is the lockable zippers. The Venturesafe X40 Plus comes packed with anti-theft features giving you peace of mind.

Comfort

As our gear list grew so did our need for a larger pack. The Venturesafe X40 Plus has surpassed our expectations. With over 30 Lbs (14 Kgs) of camera gear, the backpack is extremely comfortable. There is a good amount padding on the back, the straps secure around your waist, and the chest strap ensures even distribution. I give this pack very high marks on comfort, even being able to take it on a multi-day hike.

Design

We are stoked about the design of this pack. It can be used for travel, as a camera bag, or even for long hikes. What we love about it, is it does not look like a camera bag. The bag easily can be converted to the ultimate camera bag by adding an insert. The back opening is easily accessible and discreet. While the size of the pack is a little large for a daypack, it is small enough for carry-on. It comfortably fits a camera, four lenses, a Mavic Pro drone, a laptop, an external hard drive, a portable battery charger, spare batteries, and all cables needed. There are some front zipper pockets perfect for passports and smaller items.

Camera Inserts

Camsafe PCI Protective Inserts are sold separately, but combined make for excellent organization and keep your gear secured. For photographers, they are necessary to add on with this bag. With foam walls and adjustable dividers, they can accommodate an assortment of gear. There are different sizes available. The medium insert comfortably fits a DSLR camera, two-three lenses and spare batteries. For those looking to add on more gear, go with the large insert which fits the entire backing space.

Negatives

There are two minor negatives that I have noticed with this bag. The pack is sizable and capable of carrying multiple cameras and lenses, however, it lacks in tripod assistance. The side mesh pocket is the best option but on day one we tore a small hole in the mesh. Secondly, there is a small strap on top of the bag that logically should have a thick handle to prevent tearing and easier handling. With the exceptions of these two small mishaps, this bag is perfect for our needs.

Overall Conclusion

The Pacsafe Venturesafe X40 Plus has great design and top-notch security features. It hits spot on for looks, comfort, and safety features. We recommend this pack for camera enthusiasts and professionals who need to carry a lot of gear. It also fits the bill for travelers looking for a secure travel backpack. For amateur photographers with only one or two lenses, this bag may be too big. In that case, we recommend the Venturesafe X30, the Camsafe V25 or Camsafe V17 depending on the size.
